What is contract archaeology?

Contract archaeology is archaeological research, survey and excavation undertaken under contracts with government agencies, private organizations or individual landowners. Although legislated to transpire in advance of land development in order to protect cultural resources, it may occur in conjunction with development in urban settings or landscapes which may hold deeply buried deposits.
